More About Share

At the start of the Covid 19 situation the Grub Club team were approached to offer their expertise in the area of food supply to families in Wokingham – conversations were had and meetings held about who might need help and how we could address it. Due to the ongoing relationship with the Grub Club Team and core members of JAC (Just Around the Corner) we pulled our resources and contacts and were able to access a lot of surplus stock from BRAKES in Reading – stock that, due to the sudden cancellation of orders for the hospitality industry, would otherwise have gone in the bin.

As a result of the partnerships which have been made with local supermarkets and food distributors, we were able to supply food parcels for up to 100 families a week at times, this does not account for the number of people who came to collect food items at the church. The contacts for the food parcels came through various sources. The majority of the items we have are donated however with the financial donations we receive we are able to put this back into the project and purchase items that we require. This was when Share was born!

Share- Wokingham initially opened 3 days a week to anyone who could come along to Norreys Church, offering bakery items and any other surplus food stock we had – there was no charge for this but if people were able to make a donation, however small, it was always appreciated. This means it does not carry the stigma attached to going to the Foodbank as people are not just being able to feed themselves for little to no money, but they are also having an environmental impact in tackling the was issue.

As a result of the discussions with customers we were able to signpost to other charities and support networks in the local area. As the pandemic continued the needs of those that we support has changed, initially it was people who were shielding and unable to get out and now we are really seeing the economic impact, job losses and financial woes have meant that people are struggling – that is where we can support local community and further afield for as long as we both have the source for the food and the need for it.

Share now has 13 sites in the Wokingham, Woodley and Bracknell areas

These are tough times, but together we can support one another and build a stronger community as a result.
