Eco Church

Our place in creation is fragile,

As Christ’s church we are called to care and to tend – for each other and for the world which we have been given.

‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.’ (Genesis 1.1-2: New Living Translation)

This Summer is making many people consider the ways in which we manage our water.
There are some big questions about how sustainable our water supplies are – have a look at this webpage from BBC Climate News.

Caring for our water is one of the many ways in which we can take a step towards supporting our fragile ecology. Focusing on water would be taking action towards one of the 17 sustainable development goals identified by the UN in 2015. It would be a step towards goal number 12 (Responsible consumption and production), but perhaps you are doing that already. If so is there another goal that you might consider?
As we have mentioned in previous Bulletins we need to work as individuals and together to help to achieve such goals and to become stronger as an EcoChurch. This will take us beyond the basic changes of swapping bulbs and reducing our heating costs. We are looking at further measures in our churches – are we looking at what more we can do at home?

Each of these gives a different take on how we might respond to the current climate concerns.

‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ (Genesis 1.28: NRSV)
